LCD displays rapidly took over since they use a tiny fraction of the energy of a LED or fluorescent display and hence batteries rarely need to be replaced. At the time of LED displays, there were also vacuum fluorescent displays displaying greenish or bluish numbers.
LCD displays usually have black numbers against a silver background. With LED displays the numbers light up in red. I have divided the TI calculators by type of display, LED or LCD. The largest holdings are Texas Instrument (TI) calculators. The Calculator Museum is divided into several sections generally by manufacturer. Not having a calculator for math through grade 12 made me good at doing hand calculations, and gave me a great appreciation for calculators. I bought a Commodore scientific calculator while a freshman or sophomore at UCSD for $50 (see Vintage Technology Museum for an example) and a beautiful Sharp LCD scientific calculator (below) a year or two later for about $40 when the Commodore broke. My dad got the family a Sharp ELSI 8107 with basic operations when I was a senior in high school. I envied my friend's TI SR-50 scientific calculator which cost about $150 (over $600 in today's dollars). While I was in high school (1971-1975) the first pocket calculators came out. It did the difficult math we were doing almost instantaneously. I remember a man coming to my eighth grade math class in 1970 or 1971 and showing us a desktop electronic calculator costing hundreds of dollars. It contains over 140 calculators, starting with mechanical machines dating back to at least the 1920s to electronic pocket calculators beginning in 1970. Such was the success of the MG-880, Casio duplicated it in several forms – the MG-660, MG-770 and MG-890 calculators (each different in their own right, but sharing the same game), and in watch form in the 134 module – CA-85, CA-851,� CA-86, CA-90, CA-901.WELCOME TO THE CALCULATOR MUSEUM. It was as close to space invaders as you could get without any graphics apart from the numbers available on an LCD screen, so was dubbed the ‘space invader calculator’. It was rare to see the MG-880 actually used as a calculator, so fun and addicting was the digital invader game. Kids lucky enough to have this amazing toy could happily charge their classmates to play, although not having a volume control or mute button meant games were confined to break time and lunch, where the player could expect to be surrounded by admirers ready to applaud or scorn his ability. The manual is included but the outer cover is missing, instructions are present for the game and music mode. The plastic has yellowed slightly due to age but is intact and not brittle. It looks like it still has the original plastic wrap on the front of the calculator.The case is in good condition, no tears or rips. There is one screw missing on the back at the top left, can be seen in photo. The battery compartment is like new, no corrosion or marks.
It is in excellent condition with perfect LCD display, all keys working. This calculator has been stored in a box for over 20 years.
